Communicating with patients by e-mail is rapidly becoming a part of many physicians’ medical practice. It ranks high in patient satisfaction, and at least one study found it to be associated with better patient compliance and better control of chronic conditions. However, there are many confounding factors to this enhancement in care. These include integration with the paper or electronic medical record, implementing new kinds of e-security, workflow changes, and the lack of reimbursement for physician time spent on these communications.
