Building an Oral Health in Medicine Model Curriculum

In 2010, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) was awarded grant funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to develop, peer review and disseminate curriculum around Building Oral Health Training Capacity in Medical Education. The BOHC collection aims to advance physician understanding of the oral-systemic impact on overall health and support preparing clinicians to provide comprehensive coordinated care. This project is sponsored in part by funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration/Maternal Child Health Bureau grant #U44MC20223.

Contemporary Issues in Medicine: Oral Health Education for Medical and Dental Students

With the growing need to address patient care more systemically and holistically to include oral health and the systemic burden from oral diseases and disorders, an expert panel of physician and dental educators have identified shared requisite knowledge, skills, and attitudes related to the recognition, diagnosis, treatment and referral for oral health appropriate for medical students related to clinical dentistry and that of clinical medicine for dental students. Oral Health in Medicine Framework

The Oral Health in Medicine Study Committee reviewed learning objectives and competencies from sources such as the AAMC/ADEA joint report and Healthy People 2000/2010 in identifying appropriate content areas and observable behaviors physicians should be able to demonstrate at completion of medical school.  The final oral health in medicine collection will address the resultant eight key topic areas and requisite content for comprehension, please view PDF DocumentOral Health in Medicine Comprehension and Behavioral Expectations for more information.
