LGBT and DSD Patient Care
MedEdPORTAL’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT), and Differences of Sex Development (DSD) Patient Care Collection serves as the online destination for identifying, developing, and sharing resources aimed at improving health education in support of providing comprehensive patient care for LGBT and DSD-affected individuals.
LGBT and DSD-affected individuals face well-documented disparities when interacting with the health care system including: poorer access to needed care, bias and discrimination, a lack of provider knowledge and/or comfort in providing care, absent or suboptimal risk factor assessment, and medical management that is not grounded in the current best evidence. These disparities can lead to unnecessary and preventable negative health outcomes. To support efforts to overcome these disparities, MedEdPORTAL seeks developed curricula and assessments, best practices and continuing education focused on optimizing learners’ acquisition of the competencies and abilities to provide comprehensive care for these populations.
The define the competency domains necessary to provide comprehensive and sensitive care for the LGBT and DSD-affected populations, along with specific objectives for undergraduate medical education.
